John Patrick was born in England to parents Maria Hayman née Lane and John Hayman. Maria was born in 1866 and died in 1931 and John was born in 1864 and died in 1897.

John Hayman and Maria Lane married on 10th February 1884 and had John P Hayman in 1887. They also had a 3 other children… William henry born in 1889, Florence born in 1893 and Caroline born in 1895.

John P must have joined the Royal Navy in around 1903 as after turning 16, there is no records showing jobs etc in England on the family census. Only in the 1911 Census when he was 24, recorded as a visitor and married, obviously already in Malta.
John Hayman (1864) died on 6th May 1897 in Ugborough at the age of 36 years. Cause of death being Apoplexy. After his death it is noted that Maria being a widow with 4 children took a job as a Wool Spinner along with her son John P and William Shillabeer (registered as a boarder, living with the family in the 1901 census). It is noted that Maria and William married in Plymouth before having a daughter together, Winifred, born in 1898 but it seems that William was already married so had to serve 3 months in prison (no proof of this).
Maria died on 14th June 1931 in Buckfastleigh at the age of 64. Cause of death being Atrial fibrillation, Myocardial degeneration and Valvular heart disease.
